In trying to present a many-branched Family tree such as that of the Metcalf’s in a comprehensible way, some numerical reference system for the identification of individuals is necessary. In the tree below we have adopted the following system:- The generations are numbered in Roman numerals :- I , II, III, IV, starting with John Metcalf (1752 – 1809) of Leeds as I. The children of each generation are numbered 1, 2, 3, (using the current Arabic numerals) in succession, together with the reference number of their father. Thus Henry (IV 2.4.1.) is the second child of the fourth generation, born of the fourth child of the first child of John Metcalf. In order to simplify the numbering of later generations, a new code is started with Henry Metcalf of Voorhoede (1846 -1936) (IV.2.4.1. above). The generations are now designated A, B, C,… , Henry’s being A. The consequent numbering of generations is as before. The letters “ce” after a (death-)date, indicate that the grave is in the old “English Church” (i.e. Anglican) cemetery at Caledon; “c” on its own indicates that the grave is elsewhere in Caledon. No nicknames have been given, even where these were well established The following abbreviations have been adopted:- ch: children; d: daughter; dd: died; m : married; s : son .
